As Women’s History Month comes to an end, I hope you take the time to reflect on the changemakers of history and in our communities. Women who put their lives on the line for the right to vote to the women in your life who made ends meet without you witnessing her break a sweat.
Women are capable of anything we put our minds to. The fight for equity and justice continues all around the world, but I hope you are encouraged to stay persistent and uplift another Queen on your journey. This blog is a reminder to the reader or the women in the reader’s life that “Yes She Can”.
At The Scholars Toolkit, we reiterate that education should be a passport for your future, not a debt-sentence. Sadly, when we look at the numbers:
- Women take an additional 2 more years to pay their loans than men.
- Women make up 2/3 of the holders of the U.S. $1.9 Trillion student debt.
- Women of color who borrow money to pay for college are 12% more likely to have student loan debt than the majority of women.
This inequality results in women having less disposable income to pay back loans, and taking longer to do so. Financial literacy and access to scholarships, fellowships and grants are critical to help close this staggering disparity. Financial literacy and access to funding will also ensure that women will have more power to make decisions and have a higher quality of life. We all win when we invest in women. Our world is so much better when we remind little girls that yes she can reach her fullest potential. Yes, she can shoot for the moon and land on the stars. She can – because we are reimagining the standard.
