In media and often times in our classrooms, we refer to Asia and Asians as a homogenous body. However, that couldn’t be further from the truth! The continent is jam packed a variety of customs, traditions and ethnic groups. Asian culture permeates many facets of American society. Yet, our Asian American & Pacific Islander peers endure stereotypes and xenophobia. As AAPI Heritage Month comes to a close, take look at the history of immigration from Asia and learn about resources catered to support AAPI students.

Immigrants from Asia began coming to the U.S. in the latter half of the 1800s. 23 million Asian Americans trace their roots to more than 20 countries in East and Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent, each with unique histories, cultures, languages, and other characteristics. Despite the long ties of our cultures woven together, many Asian Americans are targets of attacks or labeled based on the model minority myth. Although Asian Americans statistically pursue higher education at a higher frequency compared to other demographics, there are significant wealth gaps within the community (source).
